We provide expert dermoscopy and teledermatology for early skin lesion diagnosis, along with non-surgical removal of moles, skin tags, and other benign lesions.

Mole skin tag and lesion removal

At Sula Clinic, we offer professional mole checks and skin lesion assessments using advanced dermatoscopy. High-resolution dermatoscope images are reviewed by expert dermatologists via a secure teledermatology service for fast, accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment planning.

Depending on the diagnosis, we can provide aesthetic lesion removal using medical-grade cautery, prescribe appropriate skin treatments or medication, or refer you to dermatology, where appropriate.

What Is Dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy (also known as dermatoscopy) is a non-invasive, highly effective diagnostic tool used to examine skin lesions and moles in greater detail. This technique uses a handheld device called a dermatoscope, which magnifies the skin up to 10 times and uses polarised light to reveal features beneath the surface that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Dermoscopy plays a vital role in the early detection of skin cancer, including melanoma, by helping to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions with greater accuracy.

At Sula Clinic, we combine dermoscopy with teledermatology — high-quality images of your skin condition are securely sent to consultant dermatologists for rapid, remote assessment. This enables a faster diagnosis and a clear, personalised treatment plan.

What is medical-grade Cautery?

The treatment involves a heated electrode applied to the lesion, generating enough heat to destroy the tissue. The heat causes the cells in the lesion to coagulate and denature, effectively removing or ablating the abnormal tissue. Different treatment methods using cautery include:

  • direct removal – the electrode is used to cut or vaporise the lesion directly.

  • desiccation – the electrode is used to dry out the lesion, causing it to fall off over time.

  • coagulation – heat is applied to stop bleeding if the lesion is vascular.

The advantages of cautery for lesion removal are:

  • precision, allowing for precise removal of the lesion with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue, meaning less risk of scarring.

  • efficiency, as the treatment is quick and can often be completed in a single visit.

  • control of bleeding as the heat from the cautery device helps to seal blood vessels, reducing the risk of bleeding during and after the procedure, and low risk of infection as the heat sterilises the area, lowering the chance of infection.

A thorough examination and consultation with our advanced nurse prescriber occurs in the first instance to determine suitability of the procedure for the specific type of lesion. Prior to treatment a local anaesthesia is administered, either topically or via injection, to numb the area around the lesion, ensuring you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.

Lesion removal with cautery is a versatile and effective method for treating a variety of skin lesions. By using heat to destroy or excise abnormal tissue, this procedure offers precise and efficient results with minimal downtime.

FAQs

  • It can take up to 72 hours for a completed dermatologist report. This report can be emailed to you for your own records and shared with your GP, upon request.

    • Pain & discomfort: mild pain or discomfort during the procedure, usually managed with local anaesthesia.

    • Scarring: there is a risk of scarring, which can be minimised with proper aftercare.

    • Infection: although rare, there is a potential risk of infection if the wound is not properly cared for.

    • Pigmentation changes: changes in skin pigmentation at the treatment site, which can be temporary or permanent.

  • Treatment cost is dependent on patient requirements and desired results. During your consultation a personalised treatment plan is created, expectations set and costing clarified. Cautery treatment starting price is £318.

    • Wound care: the treated area must be regularly cleaned with a topical antimicrobial spray (Clinispet+ Skin) which will be given to you at the time of your appointment, to prevent infection. A bandage or dressing might be used to protect the area.

    • Healing: the treated area will form a scab, which usually falls off within a few days to a couple of weeks. It is important to keep the area clean and avoid picking at the scab to minimise scarring.

    • Follow-up: a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure no complications arise.

  • Treatment cost is dependent on the number of moles and skin lesions assessed. The starting price is £250 for up to 4 lesions.
